He was an American writer of German-Irish ancestry. His Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was entitled The Grapes of Wrath (1939) and totally he wrote of twenty-seven books. In 1962, Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature. He worked as a reporter in New York but was fired so continued as a hod carrier, apprentice painter, caretaker, surveyor, and fruit picker.
During World War Two, Steinbeck became a war correspondent and later worked with special reporting assignments abroad. Steinbeck was a controversial writer because of his support for the underprivileged.
